About the Maker

Craft. Care. Timber.

The story behind MD Furniture Design

In the workshop

Hi, I'm Matt Dikkenberg

I'm a passionate furniture designer and maker from the north of Tasmania. I graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2021 with a Bachelor of Design degree, majoring in Furniture and Object Design. Since then, I've studied further to gain a teaching degree, passing on my knowledge and skills to future generations.

Alongside teaching, I run MD Furniture Design, creating custom-made furniture and woodcraft. My projects range from large pieces like beds to smaller items such as coasters, all tailored to the unique needs and tastes of my clients.

My process begins with crafting a 3D model in computer software based on my clients' requirements, ensuring every detail is meticulously planned before construction begins. This allows both myself and the client to visualise the final product and make adjustments early on.

Whether it's a complex piece of furniture or a simple wooden object, I take pride in creating items that are not only functional but also works of art that stand the test of time. When the client is pleased with my design — that's what drives me to keep making.

Timber Suppliers

Where I source my timber

I source from some of Tasmania's finest timber suppliers, chosen for their quality, sustainability, and deep knowledge of local hardwoods.

What I believe in

Sustainably Sourced

Every board is sourced responsibly — from reclaimed timber, local sawmills, and sustainably managed Tasmanian forests.

Built to Last

Using traditional joinery and time-tested techniques, each piece is built to be handed down through generations.

Made with Care

No production lines. No shortcuts. Every piece is made one at a time, with attention to every grain and joint.

Let's make something together

Whether you have a specific vision or just an idea, I'd love to hear from you.
